If you were a thoracic or vascular patient with Sentara Healthcare between 2012 and 2015, your privacy may have been violated.
Due to a third-party vendor, more than 5,000 patients may have had their personal information “inappropriately accessed,” according to a Sentara Healthcare press release. This information could include names, medical record numbers, birth dates, social security numbers, demographics and details about their procedures and medications.
Last week, Sentara Healthcare mailed letters to patients that may have been affected. Any patient that has not received a letter and believes that their information may have been accessed is asked to call 844-319-0134, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Patients who have been affected by the breach are encouraged to look out for fraudulent activity or possible identity theft by monitoring their account statements and credit reports.
The security breach is being investigated by the third-party vendor, Sentara’s Information Security team and law enforcement.
