Statement of the Privacy and Information Commissioners of Canada on national security and law enforcement measures

The Privacy and Information Commissioners and Ombudspersons from across Canada who are attending their annual meeting in Ottawa, Ontario issued a joint statement this morning recognizing with sadness the events that occurred in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec and Ottawa, Ontario last week. Within the statement, the Commissioners and Ombudspersons called on the federal government to ensure potential national security and law enforcement changes being contemplated are “measured and proportionate” with Canadian democratic values and privacy and access rights.
